The Law of Belief

Picture
In my article about the Law of Capacity, there's a story recorded in Mark 9:15-27, about a boy who was demon possessed.  The father of the boy told Jesus that if He could do anything, to take pity on them and help them.  Jesus gave a remarkable answer.  He said "if you can? All things are possible to him who believes.

Think about that statement Jesus made.  ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE TO HIM WHO BELIEVES.  There is something to keep in mind regarding this statement.  Jesus didn't limit it to negative or positive believing.   He said ALL THINGS.  All things are possible based on your beliefs.  Really?  All things are possible?  From believing?  YES!  All things are possible for the one who believes.

Your beliefs form the foundation of fear or faith in your life.  There is no distinction between negative or positive believing.  All things are possible to the one who believes.  You can believe yourself into fear.  Or you can believe yourself into faith.   n

You can fly to the heights of success or the gutter of failure by the beliefs you deeply and sincerely hold.  Those beliefs may vary, depending on whether you're thinking of relationships, finances, career or recreation.  in fact, your beliefs will affect every area of your life and destiny.

Remember my roller coaster story?  My beliefs kept me from an exciting and enjoyable with my daughter.  Your beliefs are important.  They will determine your perceptions.  As a result, they will determine the level of fear or faith you experience.  Your level of fear or faith will determine your level of success.

Which Tunnel To Drive Through

Your beliefs act as a form of tunnel vision for you.  They eliminate or cause you to ignore information coming into you that is inconsistent with what you've decided to believe.

So, when Jesus asked the father of the son if he believed He could help his son, he responded by saying he believed.  He believed intellectually that Jesus could help.  But, he also asked Jesus to help him in his unbelief.  He needed help to overcome his prior established beliefs, so new information, inconsistent with those old beliefs, could come into his heart, leading him to faith.

An important thing to remember is this.  You don't necessarily believe what you see, but you see what you believe.  William James at Harvard said, "Belief creates the actual fact".  Your beliefs will lead to perceptions.  Your perceptions of activities, situations and life in general, will be based on your beliefs.  Often these beliefs are held in your subconscious mind.  You may not even be aware of beliefs that you hold, until a situation arises where those beliefs will determine your perception.

For example, from experiences in one's past, one may develop the belief that those in authority can't be trusted.  The perception may be, that those in authority are only out for themselves and don't care about anyone else.  As a result, that person might receive a not too good review from her boss.  But, because of her belief and perception of those in authority, she'll may conclude that her boss was unfair in the review and is only out to better himself and his career.

Good or Bad?

Most people have one of two ways of looking at their world, based on their beliefs.  You can perceive your world as benevolent or malevolent.  In other words, you'll perceive the world as either being good or bad.

Benevolent

If you perceive the world as benevolent , you'll see the world as a good place to live.  You'll have a tendency to see the good in people and situations.  When you perceive the world as benevolent, you won't put as many limitations on opportunities and possibilities.  You'll see there is enough opportunity to go around.  You also generally be optimistic.

Your perception of benevolence or malevolence will also carry over in your relationship with God.  You'll either see God as a loving, benevolent God or a judgmental, malevolent God.  Your perception will either lead you into deeper faith or greater fear. This goes back to whether you'll maintain a higher level focus or a lower level focus.

A high or low level perception of God, will lead you into faith or fear.  Your focus will be based on your perception of God, which will be rooted in your deeply held belief about God.  Do you look at God as loving and benevolent or judgmental, legalistic and malevolent?  He's the same God.  But your "reality" of God and whether you have the capacity for greater faith or deeper fear, will depend on your perception of God, rooted in your beliefs.

Malevolent

Picture
ne can also believe the world is a malevolent place to live.   A person with a malevolent view of the world, will generally have a negative and pessimistic view toward himself and life.  She always waits for the "other shoe to drop" and expects the worst. When you have a malevolent view of the world and life, you basically feel you can't get ahead, because life is stacked against you.  As a result, you'll experience helplessness.

You may feel that life is against you and that the "richer get richer"  and the "poor get poorer".  This person sees oppression, injustice and misfortune everywhere.  He feels like a victim, which is rooted in deeply held beliefs, leading to this malevolent perception.  She really doesn't like herself very much.  Jesus told us to love others as you love yourself.  The person with a malevolent view of the world will have difficulty  loving or even liking others, as he doesn't really like or love himself.

In my book, "The Tree of Fear - How to Yank It Up by The Roots and Gain Sales in the Process",  I wrote about the Reticular Activating System.  Your Reticular Activating System is the part of your brain that sifts information and helps you achieve your goals.

You may decide you want to buy a new car.  You decide on the make and model of the car you may like to buy.  As you drive around town, you notice many cars like the one you're considering.  You see that type of car everywhere you go.  Does this mean there are suddenly more of those cars on the road?  No.  Your Reticular Activating System is bringing to your attention the different types and colors of that make and model of car, to help you make a decision.

In the same way, your RAS will bring to your attention, information and situations that will help you reinforce  beliefs and perceptions you hold.  So, it doesn't matter whether you have a benevolent or malevolent world view, your RAS will help you to confirm and validate your beliefs.  Then you will "know" your perceptions of life are "correct".

This is true of your perceptions of the world, people or God Himself.  Your RAS will help to validate your perceptions and world view.

Roadblock Ahead

n your travels from fear to faith, the biggest roadblocks you'll have to face your self-limiting beliefs.  These are beliefs that will hold you back from walking in faith.  For example, you may hold a self-limiting belief that God really couldn't love you, due to actions or attitudes in your past.  This could lead to a perception that you're not lovable by God.  As a result, your faith will be limited, if it exists at all.  Your prayer  life and time in the Word of God will suffer.

Whatever you belief, if you believe it enough will become your reality.  The danger of this or the hope of this, depending on your beliefs is you will walk, talk, and interact with others, including God, consistent with your beliefs.

We accept limitations too easily.  We accept, too easily, that we are limited and perhaps that God is limited in some way.  As a result, we ignore or reject any evidence that contradicts what we've already decided to believe.

For example, if you have a malevolent world view, based on your beliefs and perceptions, you may perceive that God is malevolent, that He doesn't truly love you, therefore His Word can't be trusted, because He doesn't have your best interests at heart.  This will lead you to either be angry toward God or fearful of God or both.  The reverse holds true, if you have a benevolent world view.

It all begins with your beliefs you hold in your heart.  Proverbs 23:7 says "as a man thinks in his heart, so is he".  The Law of Belief tells you, what you believe in your heart, will lead you to fear or to faith.
